RICH MOUNTAIN HISTORY:

Concise Version:

On 11 July 1861, in one of the first engagements of the American Civil War, Union regiments under the overall command of General George B. McClellan attacked and defeated Confederate troops defending a strategic mountain pass on the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike.

This Union victory, west of the town of Beverly (then county seat of Randolph County, Virginia), brought General McClellan to national prominence. More importantly, it gave the Federal forces control over much of Appalachian northwestern Virginia and allowed these counties to form a government that eventually led to the creation of a new state: West Virginia.

PARANORMAL ACCOUNTS:

Several eyewitness' have claimed to have seen apparitions, hearing voices, seeing "spirit lights" or orbs of lights, gun fire, cannon fire, marching of soldiers, being touched and being followed and watched.

G.K.I. INVESTIGATION RECORD:

During our investigations of the Rich Mountain Battlefield we had several personal experiences such as: witnessing "shadow" people on our first investigation, hearing horses clomping through the wood and snorting when there was none there, gun shots (which we can attribute to hunters in the region nothing solid), and unseen forces rushing through the grass at us as if running towards us.

We also had gathered EMF spikes around the area as well but, we could attribute those as well to the local and close power lines in that area as well so, nothing definate in evidence on the EMF meters.

We were able to capture some photo evidence as well but, only "orbs" which could be anything really from dust particles, bugs, or humidity in the air.  We had caught one shot of "mist" in the area of the old well. Mind you there was no rain, smoking, reflections of any type in that area when the photo was taken and it remains to us as "unexplained".

On our video recording we did capture however, near the stable yard area on the battlefield near the largest boulder what appeared to be someone standing on top of it then fading out extremely quick. We've went over this footage over and again and could not make out who or what it could be. This still remains "unexplained".

On digital audio recording we have gathered some good evps (electronic voice phenomenon) of "male" voice asking for "HELP" and one of a child we gather saying someones "name" but, we could not make it out clearly.  Other than just those two evps nothing else compelling was captured during our investigations.

G.K.I. SPOOK FACTOR RATING: 2 out of 10

Upon our investigations of this location we feel that there just is not that much activity going on. We've had some personal experiences, captured some evidence but, the fact remains there just wasn't enough to brand this location  "haunted".

G.K.I. CASE FILE #2 : DROOP MOUNTAIN BATTLEFIELD

DROOP MOUNTAIN HISTORY:

Battle of Droop Mountain

7574d11_medium

Droop Mountain, located three miles south of Hillsboro in Pocahontas County, was the site of one of the most important Civil War battles in West Virginia, as well as the last large-scale engagement fought on our soil. The decisive Union victory ended Confederate efforts to control the new state.

Between August and December 1863, Gen. William W. Averell led his Union soldiers in three daring raids through the mountains and valleys of southeastern West Virginia and southwest Virginia, in an attempt to break or disrupt the vital Virginia & Tennessee Railroad in the vicinity of Dublin, Virginia.

Averell’s second raid resulted in the Battle of Droop Mountain, fought November 6, 1863. Averell, based at Beverly, launched a pincer movement in conjunction with Gen. Alfred N. Duffie, at Charleston, moving to entrap the Confederate forces in the vicinity of Lewisburg. Although the plan failed, Averell’s 5,000-man force of cavalry, infantry, and artillery, clashed with some 1,700 Confederates under Gen. John Echols on the crest of Droop Mountain.

Following nearly six hours of continual artillery fire, musketry, and hand-to-hand combat, Averell’s infantry broke the Confederate left flank at ‘‘the Bloody Angle.’’ The resulting Confederate retreat became a complete rout. Although Echols managed to escape and avoid Duffie, casualties were high on both sides. Averell and Duffie called off pursuit south of Lewisburg and returned to their respective base camps.

Although Averell had won a minor victory he failed to obtain his main objective, and within 10 days the Confederates reoccupied their previous positions. The battle site is preserved today as Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park.

PARANORMAL ACCOUNTS:

Upon visiting this battlefield location, which by the way is beautiful place with many hiking trails and such but, is stained with blood, we had met with the parks local upkeeper or ranger if you will,  He had welcomed us and gave us a brief tour of the grounds, museum and whatnot. He had also told us the witness accounts to the paranormal which involves seeing apparitions of soldiers, calvary, gun fire, spectral horses, footsteps, being  touched, watched and followed to seeing very strange apparitions of floating bonnets (female headwear of the time) to a apparition of a coat floating in midair and then dissapearing in a blink of a eye.

G.K.I. INVESTIGATION RECORD:

During our stay at the park we had experienced residual sounds of possible gunfire and cannon shots. The gunfire could be possibly be from local hunters from a distance but, the cannon shot is a different story.  We had also heard what sounded like "screams" but, once again that could be attributed to something else entirely.  We had maybe one or two hits on our EMF detectors but, nothing worthwhile. On digital audio we did catch however the shots, gun fire and the "screaming" but, no other recordings unfortunately.  On digital camera we did however capture some nice shots on the main part of the battlefield (we have these pictures posted under " Investigation Pics") .

G.K.I. SPOOK FACTOR RATING: 4 out of 10

At this present time we just have not got a chance to do a very thorough investigation.  We caught next to nothing in evidence to be able to deem this location truly "haunted". In future investigations we will most definitely more man power to investigate this location due to it's enormous area. The spook factor however, is medium solely because it is a creepy location when night falls.
